Woodside Energy Group Ltd has announced a significant milestone in its operations by signing a long-term sale and purchase agreement with QatarEnergy. This deal, which spans 20 years, will see Woodside supply up to 3 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Louisiana LNG Project. The agreement is a crucial part of Woodside's strategy to expand its footprint in the global energy market.
The Louisiana LNG Project, currently under construction near Lake Charles, Louisiana, is designed to include three trains with a combined capacity of 16.5 Mtpa. The project is targeting its first LNG production in 2029, and this agreement with QatarEnergy is expected to provide a strong foundation for its long-term customer base.
Woodside's CEO and Managing Director, Liz Westcott, highlighted the importance of this agreement, stating that it reflects the disciplined execution of the company's strategy. "This landmark agreement brings together Woodside's competitive US LNG project with QatarEnergy as a customer, one of the world's leading energy companies," she said. Westcott emphasized that this partnership represents a significant vote of confidence in the Louisiana LNG project.
The agreement builds on a previously announced contract with Uniper, providing sustained revenue certainty for a substantial portion of Louisiana LNG production as the project progresses toward its first LNG output. Westcott noted that the Louisiana LNG initiative is an essential component of Woodside's global portfolio, enhancing its ability to deliver energy to customers worldwide.
Under the terms of the agreement, Woodside will supply LNG on a free-on-board basis starting from the commencement of Louisiana LNG Train 2, with quantities increasing to 3 Mtpa upon the start-up of Train 3.
As a major player in the crude petroleum and natural gas industry, Woodside's agreement with QatarEnergy could have ripple effects across the sector, potentially influencing market dynamics and partnerships among competitors in the LNG space.
The filing does not say what happens next, but the implications of this agreement are likely to unfold as the Louisiana LNG Project progresses and begins operations.
